Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama

"Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama (Japanese: 白川郷・五箇山の合掌造り集落, Shirakawa-go Gokayama no Gassho zukuri syuraku)" was registered in World Heritage in 1995. Registration ground is three places, and it is "Shirakawa-go (白川郷)" of Shirakawa Village, Gifu Prefecture and "Suganuma" and "Ainokura" of Gokayama (五箇山), Nanto City, Toyama Prefecture. These three villages are in the prefectural border in Toyama Prefecture and Gifu Prefecture, and are located in the mountainous district (Shogawa river valley) where the snowfall becomes two meters or more in winter.
These villages are well known for their houses constructed in architectural style known as "Gasshō zukuri (合掌造り)". "Gasshō zukuri" is a peculiar house form to this region. It is an isosceles triangle thatched roof. The Gassho-zukuri meaning is "prayer-hands construction".
A traffic access is inconvenient, it is only a bus. The bus for Gokayama (Ainokura and Suganuma) and Shirakawago is operated from JR Takaoka station (JR高岡駅) by the "Kaetsuno Bus (加越能バス)", Four round trips a day and the time requireds : for two and a half hours. The bus for Shirakawago is being operated from the JR Takayama station (JR高山駅) by the "Nohi Bus (濃飛バス)", Seven round trips a day and the time requireds : for one hour. The express bus for Shirakawago is being operated from JR Nagoya station (JR名古屋駅) by the "Gifu Bus (岐阜バス)", the time required : for three hours by operation from April to November and 1 a day. The nearest airport is a Toyama airport (富山空港).
