Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto

"Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto (Japanese: 古都京都の文化財, Koto Kyoto no bunkazai)" was registered in World Heritage in 1994. The Buddhist temple, the Shinto shrine, and the castle of 17 are the registration articles of World Heritage. Those places are in Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture (京都府京都市) and Uji City, Kyoto Prefecture (京都府宇治市) and Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture (滋賀県大津市). The World Heritage of Kyoto City are Kinkaku-ji Temple (金閣寺), Ginkaku-ji Temple (銀閣寺), Ryoan-ji Temple (龍安寺), Kiyomizu-dera Temple (清水寺), Nishi Hongan-ji Temple (西本願寺), To-ji Temple (東寺), Ninna-ji Temple (仁和寺), Tenryū-ji Temple (天龍寺), Kōzan-ji Temple (高山寺), Saihō-ji Temple (西芳寺), Daigo-ji Temple (醍醐寺), Kamigamo Shrine (上賀茂神社), Shimogamo Shrine (下鴨神社) and Nijo Castle (二条城). The World Heritage of Uji City are Byōdō-in Temple (平等院) and Ujigami Shrine (宇治上神社). The World Heritage of Otsu City is Enryaku-ji Temple (延暦寺).
Kyoto is Ancient Town in Japan where the history exists for 1200 years or more. It extended long and Japanese capital from the Heian Period (平安時代, Heian jidai) to Edo period (江戸時代, Edo jidai) of 1073 years. Kyoto is assumed to become the heartland of the Japanese culture, and for the temple of 1600 or more and the Shinto shrine of 400 or more to exist from such historical details. Shrines and temples registered in World Heritage are the main tourist spots in Kyoto. However, a lot of famous tourist spots worth visiting spending time besides the registration article of World Heritage remain. The typical place is Kyoto Imperial Palace, Heian Shrine, Sanjūsangen-dō, Kōryū-ji Temple, Nanzen-ji Temple and Sanzen-in Temple.
